It’s no secret that the process of inventing a new product is no walk in the park... logistically or financially. Unfortunately, inventing, like most passion driven goals, can become prey for people and companies looking to take advantage of individual’s personal drive and passion behind their beliefs.

Many “Invention Companies” tend to run ads luring unsuspected candidates through inviting advertisements and (800) numbers full of promises to help the inventor to develop an idea and license it to large manufactures and companies.

Most of the time, you can be pretty sure that this is a ploy, and the only thing that you will end up with in the end is a booklet about your product, and a bank account less 10 to $20,000.00 of money spent in vain on a false promise. Always beware of any company that claims to prepare, promote, license or present your “PRODUCT IDEA” to companies. In too many cases, this is where you begin to pay nonsensical fees in addition to possibly loosing your product idea, and common sense needs to come into play. The “IDEA” is yours to develop… The “PRODUCT” is what you want to promote. You should also be aware of companies that clearly state (and sometimes not so clearly) that they provide this service for their own benefit. Why? Shouldn’t it also be for the benefit of the inventor or product owner as well? If this company truly has an interest in your finished product, it shouldn’t cost you a dime until you receive orders generated by that company for product and inventory. Then, and only then should you pay a percentage sold or ordered based on that quantity. If you choose to license your product or idea to companies through an agency, understand the risks involved and the very few changes that can be made to your product or idea to reproduce it under a new patent.

If you have fallen victim to this ploy in the past, don’t fret because you’re not alone. The business of inventing or product development is a breeding ground for such thieves as these.

Never, ever give money to a company that promises you only a booklet about your product with drawings and evaluations. This is definitely a scam and YOU ARE ABOUT TO BE ROBBED! If you have been following the “American Inventor” program on ABC, then you know that they have already addressed this and said exactly the same thing on-air. To know this is a “Cardinal Rule” for all inventors everywhere. Also, when a company suggests that a non-disclosure or non-compete agreement is not necessary between you and them, they are dead wrong and the reason is obvious. You should always avoid disclosing your idea or product when possible, but when you must disclose it, you must always have this agreement in place. This agreement is designed for the benefit and safeguard of you the inventor and your idea or product and does not in any way benefit the interest of the company or persons the idea is being presented to. Instead, it prevents the company or persons from stealing your idea and leaving you with nothing. This agreement is for your protection only and does not, and will not commit you the inventor in any way to anyone. It is your only real protection short of not showing your invention to anyone. Be sure that it's always in place with anyone that comes in contact with your idea.

Another business that has fallen victim of this horrible crime of taking advantage of ones passion is the music industry. The music industry is chock-full of perceptive soul stealers. People who live off of the hope of another's personal drive and belief in themself and what they are trying to achieve.

Part of undertaking such a venture is to understand the risks and realities of these facts. It is important to know whom you are dealing with, and most of all, to use good sense in all of your decision-making. You can be fairly confident that if something doesn't sound like it makes sense, it’s most likely because you’re right, it doesn’t. Common should be the operative word when using sense, however in most cases... it’s not.
